Model Horses

How did you get started collecting model horses?

Some collectors were given model horses as children perhaps because they loved horses but couldn’t have the real thing for whatever reason or maybe they did have a real live horse but also loved horse toys.

Whatever your reason for loving and collecting model horses, there are thousands of model horse collectors around the world and thousands of beautiful model horse collections.

There are a number of different brands of model horses.  Probably the most commercial and best known are the Breyer Model Horses but there are other manufacturers also producing unique and beautiful model horses – Schleich, Stone Horses, Beswick/Royal Doulton, NorthLight, Border Fine Arts, Trail of Painted Ponies, Klimer to name but a few….

Each brand of model horse has its own unique quality and appeal and avid group of enthusiasts and collectors.  My particular interest is in models of famous or well known horses.  Breyer is well known for producing these.  I also love the dilute model horses and there are a number of model horse manufacturers producing these.

Model horses come in plastic, resin, pottery or porcelain.  Many are faithful representations of the individual horse or breed they represent but there are also the ‘fairytale’ or more mythical creations.  Some are also just plain cute even though not strictly accurate with respect to conformation and type.

Size also varies with most manufactures carrying a few stock size ranges.  Breyer for example manufactures the following lines:

Traditional: 1:9 scale (approx. 12 x 9 in.)
Classics: 1:12, dollhouse scale. (approx. 9 x 6 in.)

 Paddock Pals: 1:24 scale (approx 6 x 5 in.)
 Stablemates: 1:32 scale (approx. 4 x3 in.)

Mini Whinnies: 1:64 scale (approx. 1 ½ x 1 ½ in.)

The most popular Breyer, and therefore also the line which carries the most accessories, is the large Traditional model horse range.  This is the range that also depicts famous or well known horses such as highly successful racehorses, Olympic winning eventers and dressage horses and national champions of various disciplines.

One of the world's leading manufacturers of toy animals and figures, Schleich produces a huge range of quality animal figurines. Each range of figures exhibit superb attention to detail and quality modelling. They are also hand painted and made from top quality plastics.

The Schleich Horse Figurines feature the same quality and attention to detail found in all the Schleich animals and figures. They are collectable, playable, of high quality, and timeless.

Klima Figurines

Klima figurines are produced by the French firm Klima but they are made and individually hand painted in Thailand. The Thai people have a manual dexterity, skill and patience that allows them to produce these perfect miniatures.

Klima has been producing these exquisite miniature figurines for over 25 years old....it is a unique collection due in large part to the exceptional quality of the individual pieces in each collection.

Whatever your fancy is in the model horse world, you’re sure to find something that appeals to you from the dozens of manufacturers and thousands of model horses being produced.
