If you are looking at purchasing a horse, or have one but need some advice as to how to start training it, this book could be what you're looking for to start out with.
It is a basic fact of life that horses, accidents and injuries often go hand in hand. They are after all a prey species and they owe their existance today to their basic flight instinct, which is their automatic untrained reaction to fear or danger.
So, one way of preventing injuries, to yourself and your horse, is through correct education and training. A well trained horse is less likely to misbehave and more likely to listen to you and take his / her cues from you, making him / her a much safer animal to handle and ride. A horse also requires basic training just so that you can do simple, every day things with it like lead it, tie it up, do its feet, worm it and so on. An untrained, unhandled horse at the end of the day generally ends up at the sale yards because it is virtually unsaleable anywhere else and ultimately that usually means in a can of pet food. So, learn to train your horse correctly so that you can manage it and make it manageable. This makes it useful and safer to be around.
Not enough time or experience ???? Then seek out a good trainer. The end result should be that you have a horse that is well trained. You however will still be untrained unless you are already an experienced rider and have only used a trainer because you just don't have the time to train your own horse. If you are somewhat inexperienced, you need to get training for yourself as well so that you can continue your horse's training. That can all add up to a very expensive learning curve.
Training a horse on your own though is certainly doable, even if you aren't very experienced. Sure, you will both be learning at the same time and yes, you will inevitably make mistakes but limit those chances and learn what to do to correctly from the start. This book will give you a great start.
